Friends,
I am pleased to bring you some great news! This morning, we announced new employment results. In the month of April, we had the single largest monthly employment gain in 17 years. 19,000 new jobs. All but a handful in the private sector (and none in state government, by the way). Massachusetts is on the mend and on the move.
I am especially pleased that these numbers come as a direct result of the work our team has been doing rebuilding our infrastructure and encouraging the innovation industries like biotech, clean tech and information technology. Many of these businesses are small, and as commercial activity continues to improve for them, we are doing everything we can to help them with access to working capital and relief from soaring health care premiums. Economists believed that because of our team’s stewardship through this crisis, Massachusetts would emerge from recession faster than the rest of the country and stronger than we were before. I am always a little skeptical of the forecasts of economists – but we have worked hard to make these predictions a reality.
Needless to say, if you are still out of work, good statistics don’t help. I know that. That’s why we will keep at it, until every resident looking for work can find it. But I am optimistic, because I am confident that we are on the right path for a lasting recovery. Keep the faith. We’re on your side.
Thank you,
